A photovoltaic system, also called a PV system or solar power system, is an electric power system designed to supply usable solar power by means of photovoltaics. The cost of producing photovoltaic cells has dropped because of in production and technological advances in manufacturing. When there is more local generation than consumption, electricity is exported to the grid.

A photovoltaic system employs solar modules, each comprising a number of solar cells, which generate electrical power. PV installations may be ground-mounted, rooftop-mounted, wall-mounted or floating. Module performance is generally rated under standard test conditions (STC): of 1,000 , solar of 1. Overall the manufacturing process of creating solar photovoltaics is simple in that it does not require the culmination of many complex or moving parts. The term "photovoltaic" comes from the φῶς (phōs) meaning "light", and from "volt", the unit of electromotive force, the , which in turn comes. Solar cells produce direct current electricity from sunlight which can be used to power equipment or to There have been major changes in the underlying costs, industry structure and market prices of solar photovoltaics technology, over the.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation is the process of converting energy from the sun into electricity using solar panels. PV systems can also be installed in grid-connected or off-grid (stand-alone) configurations. Off-grid (stand-alone) PV systems use arrays of solar panels to charge banks of rechargeable batteries during the day for use at night when energy. When solar arrays are installed on a property, they must be mounted at an angle to best receive sunlight.
