Absolutely! In fact, most home solar systems are currently operating without battery storage. If you’re fine with drawing from the grid and not particularly worried about power outages, you might not need a battery. It many cases, battery storage is a “nice to have” with solar panels for home use. However, there are a growing number of scenarios where having a solar battery bank is beneficial, if not completely necessary.

There are five main components involved in the making of a grid-connected solar system. All these components work together to generate electricity from sunlight and supply power to the household appliances after installation.

There are 3 ways to add solar battery backup to an existing grid-tie system: AC coupling, DC coupling, or replacing your inverter. Grid-tied inverters need the power grid to operate—they constantly sense grid voltage and frequency and will shut off if it falls out of range. Retrofitting solar systems with new equipment can be tricky because of all the different equipment options and various methods for incorporating energy storage.
