The source power may come from the electric power grid, such as an electrical outlet, energy storage devices such as batteries or fuel cells, generators or alternators, solar power converters, or another power supply. The main purpose of a power supply is to convert from a source to the correct , , and to power the load. FunctionalPower supplies are categorized in various ways, including by functional features.

Distribution substations connect to the transmission system and lower the transmission voltage to medium voltage ranging between 2 kV and 33 kV with the use of transformers. Traditionally, the distribution systems would only operate as simple distribution lines where the electricity from the would. Electricity is delivered at a frequency of either 50 or 60 Hz, depending on the region.

A photovoltaic system, also called a PV system or solar power system, is an electric power system designed to supply usable solar power by means of photovoltaics. The cost of producing photovoltaic cells has dropped because of in production and technological advances in manufacturing. When there is more local generation than consumption, electricity is exported to the grid.
